Shure SE530 Sound Isolating Earphones

Travel-happy audiophiles will be infinitely pleased with the Shure SE530s, but these earbuds should also be a consideration for anyone who has half a grand to drop on some sweet headphones.

When a company creates a product that's sufficiently remarkable to garner a spot among CNET's testing equipment, chances are that's a good place to look for further quality products. Such is the case with Shure, whose E4c earbuds quickly become our headphone of choice for MP3 player audio testing. Actually, the entire E series is impressive, which is why the company didn't stray far from that blueprint when it created its new Sound Isolating line, the SE series. In fact, the Shure SE530, the $500 pair that is the subject of this review, is nearly identical to its predecessor, the E500PTH.

There's not much about the Shure SE530 model that provokes complaint, but if there's one thing we're not that keen on it's the rather large earbuds--they tend to stick out of the ear quite a bit. Of course, we also realize that this is necessary to cram in three drivers: each bud has what Shure calls a Triple TruAcoustic MicroSpeaker that consists of two woofers and one tweeter. Though they are large, the 'buds are sleek-looking, decked out in a gunmetal chromelike finish. And while they may protrude a bit from some ears, no one should have a problem getting a proper, sealed fit. Shure includes a plethora of eartips: three sizes (S, M, L) of silicone sleeves, one set of triple flange fittings, and--our favorite--four sets of molded, black foam tips (also in varying sizes). Since the foam sleeves are nearly identical to traditional earplugs, it's easy to get a comfortable fit.

As is traditionally the case with Shure earphones, the SE530s have a thick, durable cable--black, in this case. Unlike the E series before it, though, the cable for the SE models is modular. An initial Y cable (18 inches long) terminates in a gold plug and allows the headphones to be used "as is" with an MP3 player carried in a shirt pocket or worn clipped to a bag strap. Shure also includes two extender cables to help with length adjustment: one short (9 inches) and one long (36 inches). When we had both connected, we could comfortably listen to music coming through the computer, which is stationed on the floor under the desk. Shure includes a few other useful extras that one would expect from a high-end package. There's an inline volume control, an airplane adapter, a quarter-inch adapter (for at-home use), a hard-shell carrying case, and the necessary-but-gross earwax cleaning pick.

Of course, the star of the show with the Shure SE530s is sound quality, which we expect to be stellar in a $500 pair of earphones. These 'buds definitely live up to their lofty price point. In fact, our listening tests inspired frequent bouts of desk dancing, much to the amusement of neighboring editors. The Shure SE530s sound fantastic, pure and simple, but where to begin? First, the 'buds offer excellent passive-noise isolation, assuming you achieve a proper seal with the ear, which shouldn't be a problem given the aforementioned array of fittings. The seal also allows for deep, tight bass response--it's enveloping without being overwhelming, and there's no distortion. The highs are sparkly, and music overall has impressive clarity--even during frantic hard rock riffs, we could pick out the varying sounds. Detail is certainly not lost to these 'phones, either. You can even hear a chair squeak in the recording of Jaimie Clullum's "Photograph."

With headphones that sound this fantastic, it's tough--if not impossible--to decipher which genres really shine. Everything sounds good, but techno and electronica sound phenomenal. During Robert Miles' "In My Dreams," we were transported, surrounded by speakers. Of course--with any earbuds--you're not going to get sound as open as with full-size headphones or external speakers, but the Shure SE530s do an admirable job of opening the experience.

Sound Quality

A pair of earphones can look and feel great, but what it all boils down to is their ability to produce audio. While testing the E2cs, I played a variety of music to determine their strengths and weaknesses. From Beethoven symphonies to punk rock, I tested its high treble and bass capabilities.

What I found was the E2cs were superb in the mid to high range. I listen to a fair bit of R&B, and the clear and balanced audio I got was a welcome surprise. And when listening to a Mozart violin concerto, I did not hear the overly-bright and “biting” sounds that most earphones fall victim to.

In the lower ranges, the earphones were alright, though I would recommend those who want a strong bass sound to use the foam sleeves instead of the rubber ones. This is because the foam sleeves can fit deeper into your ears, which enable you to get the most bass out of your music. Even so, my Sennheiser HD-series cans outperform the E2cs in terms of bass any day. (Believe me though; you are not going to see me jogging in those!)

Sound Isolation

Of course, the most prominent attribute of the E2cs lies with its “sound isolation” ability. Mind you, the technology that Shure employs is not the same as noise cancellation (a technology that records the offending wavelengths of unwanted noise and broadcasts identical wavelengths in an opposite phase to cancel them out.). Instead, Shure has used a much simpler but equally (if not more) effective way of blocking out unwanted noise, by designing ear buds that fit deeper and seal better in your ear.

This may seem like too easy a solution to a widespread problem, but in reality, it is very effective. While it may initially take a little adjusting with the ear buds for you to find the best position in your ear, you will find that the E2cs completely isolate you from outside noise. For example, I have the buds in my ear right now as I type, and though I am not even listening to music, I can barely hear the sounds my fingers striking the keyboard. With all its effectiveness, I am surprised that this method for blocking noise is not being exploited by many other earphone manufacturers.

Conclusion
Shure’s cheapest earphone offering, the E2cs make great use of sound isolating technology. And while $99 is still a hefty price to pay for a pair of ear buds, those looking for a less visible solution to their portable audio needs should definitely give these a try. Plus, with the 30-day no-questions-asked return policy that Shure offers, there really is nothing to lose, but quite possibly, there is a pair of great buds to gain.

Shure SE310 Sound Isolating Earphones Review

(Review) - When it comes to making earphones, Shure knows what it’s doing. They are quite possibly the most consistent and quality driven earphones maker to emerge in the market, and it shows that with their rising popularity ever since the debut of their first consumer product line. Today, Shure is back with a new series, one of which we’ll be taking a look at, the SE310. The SE310 is a midrange earphones model from the SE line, but at a seriously deep price tag, you may not know it.

Honestly speaking, Shure would’ve been fine with its E series product line, as there was very little, if anything at all, wrong with it, but we can understand the business decision behind it. As you can imagine, there wasn’t much to improve with the ES series, so Shure updated the outer appeal of the earphones, and we must say the ES310 looks downright amazing, much better than the E series. They have a round-ish shape with a striking black and silver-ish body. You can’t get any better than this. The fit, as always, was exception in our testing.

Other than the striking outer appeal, Shure includes two sets of wires, an 18-inch and a 36-inch cable as an extension for putting the music player in your pocket, as opposed to your shirt pocket with the shorter one. Then there’s the Deluxe Fit Kit, which consists of the standard carrying case, a wax guard (for cleaning the eartips), flex and form sleeves that are available in three sizes: S, M and L.

The technology behind the SE310 is pretty much similar to other Shure earphones, and again, they sound absolutely amazing. The audio quality was crisp, clear, balanced and an overall pleasure to listen to with the ES310. Even the bass was excellent.

All in all, for the price of $250, the ES310 is an expensive pair, but regardless of the price, they are well worth it. Amazing job, Shure! Excellent!

Shure Earphones with Sound Isolating Technology

Sound Isolating Technology

Why sound isolating earphones?

Sound isolating earphones provide sound quality far beyond the technical ability of the most expensive earbuds and isolation that's superior to the best headphones. By creating a secure fit between the sound source and your ear canal, unwanted background noise is blocked out while the music comes straight in.

What are sound isolating earphones?
Sound isolating earphones were originally developed as Personal Monitor Systems to allow musicians to hear their own performances in loud onstage environments. Sound isolating earphones work by using soft, pliable sleeves to block background noise, allowing small, high-performance drivers to deliver incredibly precise sound directly to the ear. These professional-quality earphones are now available for use with all of your portable digital devices.

Is isolation different from noise cancellation?
The seal created by a sound isolating earphone physically blocks most frequencies of background noise. Active noise cancellation "headphones" are generally larger, heavier and battery-driven. The active cancellation process negates selected frequencies through a complex process that can even introduce unwanted artifacts into the resulting audio. The natural sound isolation properties of a properly fitted in ear earphone

How are Shure's sound isolating earphones different from other headphones?
The primary difference is their listening position - where they are worn in relation to your ear. Headphones generally enclose your ear or rest on top of it. Regular earphones (like the earbuds often packaged with CD players) sit on the outside of the ear. Sound isolating earphones are different. They are designed to fit inside your ear canal, where they create an isolated listening area that is responsible for their superior acoustic properties.

How do in ear sound isolating earphones work?
By selecting from an assortment of included soft, flexible sleeves, you're able to personalize the fit of the earphones to your ears. The sleeves conform to the unique shape of your ear, creating a seal that isolates you from ambient noise.

Why is isolation important?
Sound isolation makes it possible to hear greater detail at a lower volume than is possible with earbuds or most headphones intended for portable use. Lower-volume listening means less fatigue over extended periods and is safer than trying to overcome background noise by turning up the volume. This makes sound isolating earphones the ideal choice for commuting, travel, exercise, study, or work - any activity where you desire portable, hi-fidelity sound.
